Syrian rebels chop the head of a fellow fighter in a case of mistaken identity.

FARES_2734634b A video posted to YouTube shows two soldiers from the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham holding a decapitated head in the air while addressing a crowd of onlookers.

But soon after the video was posted fighters from the rebel group Ahrar al-Sham identified the decapitated man as one of their own.

They said the victim, Mohammed Fares (standing to right in the above photograph), was a member of their Sunni Islamist group that had actually fought alongside the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham.

A separate video posted to YouTube prior to Fares’ death appears to show him speaking alongside other rebel fighters.

Syrian rebels belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham brandished the decapitated head of a man they thought was a fighter for Bashar Assad.
